Clear-Cut Wins In Women’s Softball
The disadvantages of rubber eleats were fully evident when women's softball matches were placed on wet grounds on Saturday.
Many players had difficulty keeping their footing and pitchers had the double handicap of a wet ball and the constant possibility of slipping as the rubber cleats failed to give any stability. Monowai and Christchurch West mastered the conditions better than their opponents to •core easy victories. Results:— Monowai 11, Avon 1. West 20, Spreydon 8. MONOWAI v. AVON Monowai opened strongly and good batting by B. Makinson, M. Hapuku, E. Law and L. Leask helped it to score five runs. Monowai had its only scoreless innings in the third but again attacked in the fourth. A two-base hit by J. Moher, errors and erratic pitching, due to the slippery conditions, helped the side to score four runs. Hits by Makinson and N. Beale brought Monowai its last run In the fifth •nd last innings. In spite of good hits by J. Baker and S. Chamberlain, Avon failed to score In its first three innings. Its only run of
the game came in the fourth when J. Baker scored on errors. B. Clark hit well in the last but to no avail. WEST v. SPREYDON Strong batting, with J. Bellaney and J. Patterson prominent, gave Spreydon little chance and West had little difficulty in winning a high scoring game. Both teams scored one run in the first innings and West, with powerful batting, added eight in the second innings to take a strong hold on the game. West kept up the attack in Its later innings and with four runs in its third, five in the fourth, and two in the fifth never looked in danger. J. Jackson scored for Spreydon in the second innings. Taking advantage of fielding errors and with a hit by Jackson, Spreydon added three runs in the third innings. Scoreless in its fourth, Spreydon faced its Impossible task with determination in Its last bat and from hard drives scored three runs. OTHER RESULTS Second Grade.—Monowai A 19, Vanguard 5; West 10, Monowai 5: Western Suburbs 7, Kaiapol 0; Teachers’ College 10, Wigram 4. Third Grade.—West 6. Monowai 5; Avon 23, Templeton 12.
