Traffic Plan
Sir, —“Preserver” can be answered from Buchanan’s report, which states (1) “A full scale study of the whole area is needed.” (This I think is being done by the appropriate authorities); (2) “MEANWHILE (my capitals) we find the transportation study to be reliable so far as the case for the central motorways is concerned;” (3) “We see no reasonable way of avoiding the Fendalton motorway across the Park;” (4) “On a combination of traffic and environmental grounds much of the motorway construction is justified NOW;” (5) “No one should imagine that serious sacrifices and hardships can be altogether avoided.” Space prevents my discussing the Antigua street bridge in this letter—l regard it as essential especially for the “Cinderella” area of south-west Christchurch. The implementation of the traffic plan cannot be relegated, as “Preserver” would appear to wish, to the Greek calends.—Yours, etc., OBSERVER. November 5, 1966.
Prisoner Escaped.—A prisoner escaped from the Pukekohe Police Station cells late yesterday afternoon, a few hours after his arrest He is Edward Moko, aged 18.— (PA.)
