Fire From Crackers
A 16-year-old boy, Edward Hartley, suffered arm injuries when he started a fire by throwing crackers accidentally into the washhouse of his home at 167 Huxley street on Thursday evening.
The crackers broke the washhouse window. The boy put his arm through the broken window to try to retrieve the crackers when the fire began. He suffered cuts near his wrist artery, and was taken to the Christchurch Hospital for treatment The alarm was given at 6.52 p.m. Firemen from the Sydenham and Sockbum stations had the blaze out within a few minutes of arrival but the washhouse was badly damaged.
