Mrs Stephen In 440 yd
The Commonwealth Games representative, Mrs M. A. Stephen (Technical). may make her first competitive appearance today since her dramatic collapse in the 880 yd event in Jamaica.
She has entered for the 440 yd event in the inter-dub track and field meeting at Rugby Park. Her strongest competition should come from Miss L. Fisher, who was one of Wellington’s leading woman half-milers until she moved to Christchurch this season.
A women’s mile event is also included in the programme but Mrs Stephen has not entered.
Two other prominent athletes, M. Walls and C. F. Stricke, will also be making their first appearances this season. Walls, the reigning New Zealand 120 yd hurdles champion, will be contesting the 220 yd hurdles and the 100 yd sprint. Stricke, holder of the Canterbury pole vault record at 13ft Bin, seems a certain winner of this event.
The senior javelin contest promises to develop into an interesting struggle between the New Zealand title-holder, R. G. Bali and D. C. Leary, who was also placed in the national event at the beginning of this year. Both men are capable of more than 200 ft.
