PLUNKET SHIELD MATCHES Most Cricketers Would Play On Sundays
With few exceptions, Canterbury’s leading cricketers would play Plunket Shield cricket on Sundays if it was instituted.
Of those approached, who played for Canterbury last season, a majority also see nothing wrong with Sunday play—especially in the afternoon—but respect those who may not wish to play for religious, moral or family reasons.
The players approached were asked if they favoured Sunday Plunket Shield cricket, at present a point of contention in New Zealand cricket, and if they would play. The replies were:— B. F. Hastings.—Yes, especially for economic reasons. Sunday play would be money saved in hotel accommodation, and money earned through the gates. There is not much for people to do on a Sunday and these are changing times. I respect those who object to Sunday play on religious grounds. R. C. Motz—lt doesn’t really worry me. If the C.C.A. pick
me to play on a Sunday, I’ll play. M. L. Ryan.—l would definitely play but wouldn’t think it a very good idea. Men with families want to spend some time with them and I do like the idea of Mr R. A. Vance (a Wellington administrator) —let those that want to play on Sundays, play. B. R. Taylor.—l am not in favour but am prepared to play. I feel at least one day in the week should be a break and Sunday play could be a mistake.
D. L. Gallop.—Yes. B. G. Hadlee.—l am not In favour, and against regular organised sport on Sundays.
Sunday should be treated as a day of relaxation and in the heavy programme over Christmas and New Year, there shoulfl be a break. I would not play in the mornings and could only entertain the idea of afternoon play on Sundays; I would have to give it a great deal of thought. P. A. Sharp.—l am not against it personally and would play, but I do not favour something that would exclude people because of their religious views. A rest day does not go astray, although economically, Sunday play would serve a good purpose. Other cricket competitions could be held on Sundays but, at the moment, I do not think Plunket Shield cricket is suited for Sundays. C. L. Bull, G. W. Henry.— No personal objections. J. M. Mclntyre.—l haven’t given it much thought but ■ would play if it was brought , in.
