AWARD TO JUNIORS

Athletic Trophy An award to the Canterbury "junior athlete of the year” will be made by the Canterbury Amateur Athletics Centre this season. Proposed conditions agreed by the centre’s executive last evening were that the award be known as the Edward Mayes Memorial Challenge Trophy and that any athlete, junior grade or below, would be eligible for it. J. C. Harbut suggested that performance, consistency, improvement, loyalty and sportsmanship should have a bearing on the award and that a “selfish” person be avoided.

The choice would be made by the Canterbury selectors and they would not be bound to nominations received from clubs.

Mr Mayes, who died recently, was a well-known coach in Christchurch from the 1920 s who specialised in juniors and it was the wish of his widow to have a trophy awarded to junior athletes. The conditions will be submitted to Mrs Mayes. Provincial Mooting.—Wellington’s suggested programme for the Dorrie Leslie Cup meeting (at Wellington) was accepted, although some additions were suggested. These include the open pole vault, javelin, 440 yard hurdles, junior hammer, women’s 880 yards, and a road walk. Adjudicators.—Messrs R. Elder and E. Lunn will meet the Lovelock club of Timaru and the South Canterbury sub-centre on Tuesday evening tn an effort to iron out their differences. Young Team.—A team of children, down to the age of eight, will be chosen by the centre from nominations received, to compete in a meeting at Blenheim on December 3.
