Escaper Caught

The prisoner who escaped from Paparua Prison on Monday, Michael William Gray, aged 21, was recaptured in Christchurch yesterday morning. Three truck drivers and a resident telephoned the police after Gray was seen running, barefoot, between the trees in the middle of Fitzgerald avenue. Police in cars converged on the avenue and Gray gave himself up quietly about 9.20 a.m.

He escaped from prison when he was in a working party on the sports field in front of the main block. About 45 policemen, most in cars and two in a helicopter, hunted him on Monday. He slept in a house in the city on Monday night
