Reaction To Tour Foreseen
(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) LONDON, October 31. Although most observers are convinced the Holyoake Government will prevail in New Zealand’s General Election, a minority thinks that after the “initial euphoria” of President Johnson’s visit “a reaction is setting in that will help Labour and make the final election result much closer than anyone had thought possible,” according to the Wellington correspondent of the “Guardian.”
“This school believes that once President Johnson’s barely-disguised call for New Zealand to do more sinks in, then Labour will pick up votes.”
While there was widespread uneasiness about the state of
the economy it was doubted whether Labour could show it would do any better. “All it has said,” the correspondent adds, “remembering the disastrous (electorally speaking) Budget of 1958, is that it will not adopt those crash tactics again. But what would it do? Failure to be specific on this question may lead voters to prefer the devil they know rather than one they don’t.”
