Russian Christians Call For Vietnam Peace
A copy of an appeal from a Russian Christian organisation to all Christians to pray for the end of the Vietnam war has been received at the Christchurch offices of the National Council of Churches. The appeal, from the
Evangelical Christians Baptists of the U.S.S.R. was drawn up during the organisation’s all-union congress held in Moscow early in October. “When one’s neighbour’s house is on fire, it is impossible to sleep quietly. When a flame of war is blazing in some part of the world, mankind must be on the watch and, by united efforts, not only localise the fire, but extinguish it,” says the appeal. “We appeal to the United States Government and to the governments of the other states, whose troops are now in Vietnam, in the name of Christian love to cease fire in Vietnam, to withdraw troops from the country, and to allow the Vietnamese people to determine their own affairs.” The appeal says that the congress completely supports “our American brothers and sisters in Christ, who protest against the war, which is being led now by their Government in Vietnam.”
