Special Votes May Be Lodged In Advance

Special votes in the General Election may be lodged at any time between the close of nominations of candidates tomorrow and election day on Saturday, November 26.

Special votes are those made by persons who, although qualified to vote, are unable to attend a polling booth without undue inconvenience or hardship, or are outside their electorates (or even New Zealand) on election day, or are in certain other categories (listed below). The votes may be lodged in advance with the Registrar of Electors, Collector of Customs, or any returning officer. All returning officers in the Christchurch area will provide facilities for special votes on election day at every hospital, maternity home, or institution for aged or infirm persons. Special Voters The following list of categories of special voters has been supplied by the Registrar of Electors (Mr F. G. Elsmore). A person who is qualified to vote (through age and residential qualifications) may cast a special vote if. (1) His name does not appear on an electoral roll, or has been wrongly deleted from it. (2) He will be outside New Zealand on polling day. (3) He will be absent from his electorate on polling day. (4) He will not be within two miles of a polling place on polling day. (5) He will be travelling throughout polling day under conditions which preclude him from attending a polling place.

(6) He will because of illness or infirmity be precluded from attending a polling place. (7) In the case of a woman, she is precluded from attending a polling place through approaching or recent, maternity. (8) He is a lighthouse keeper, or member of a lighthouse staff (including ■wives) and is precluded from attending a polling place. (9) He has religious objection to voting on a Saturday. (10) He satisfies a Returning Officer, or a deputy, that it will be impossible to attend a polling place without undue inconvenience or hardship. Any Polling Place On polling day, any person who is qualified to vote is absent from his electorate may call at any polling place and be given a special vote for his own electorate. To assist those lodging special votes in advance, the Registrar of Electors will maintain a staff to issue special votes as from the close of nominations of candidates tomorrow, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. each day. This staff of returning officers, from whom advance special votes may be obtained, and to whom they should be posted or transmitted back before the close of the poll, is: AVON: Mr J. L. W.
