N.Z. BEATEN IN SOFTBALL
(K.ZJ’.A .-Reuter—Copyright) MEXICO CITY. New Zealand was beaten, 2-0, by the United States yesterday in the first of two play-off games for final standings in the men’s world softball tournament in Mexico City.
The Kiwis next face Puerto Rico to decide the third and fourth place winners. The Puerto Ricans lost, 0-5, to Mexico yesterday, and the United States and Mexico will meet to determine first and second place winners. N. Wickersham knocked the ball over the fence in the second and fourth innings to score the United States’ two runs.
The winning pitcher, C. Richard, was voted outstanding player of the tournament. Richard’s pitching against
New Zealand brought him 13 strike-outs, two hits and three walks.
New Zealand’s two hits were made by C. Phillips, in the fourth, and T. Bell, in the seventh.
G. Tattersfield pitched the first four innings for the Kiwis, having one walk, five hits and no strike-outs. W. Massey took the other three innings, striking out two and giving no hits and no walks. The New Zealand coach, Mr T. Boyle, said he was pleased with “an excellent performance by the team.”
