7802 NEW PHONES
This Year’s Connexions
The Post Office had connected 7802 new telephones in Christchurch during the first nine months of this year, said its Regional Engineer (Mr H. W. Wilkinson). During September, there were 739 new connexions.
The Waiting list at the end of the month had 742 applications. Of these. 418 could be offered service immediately, had entered agreements. or had been advised that service was available but had not entered agreements. Another 324 cduld not be offered immediate service because no lines or cable pens were available. Mr Wilkinson said relief works were going on all the time to give service to applicants who had waited a long time. Even if the demand could be satisfied at once it would be unwise to do so, as a back-log of work was always needed.
