RESTYLED CORTINA
A NEWLY-STYLED Cortina has been announced by Ford of Britain, and the first examples of the new model are expected to go on show in New Zealand in about two months. The Cortina Mark II has improved road-holding, more interior space, and more power. Front and rear shoulder room is two inches greater than in the previous model, and leg-room and boot space have also been increased.
The 1200 c.c. engine is replaced by a 1300 c.c. unit which produced 57.5 b.h.p. at 5000 r.p.m. The 1300 c.c. Cortina has a top speed of about 80 m.p.h., while the
1500 c.c. Super model has a top speed of 82 m.p.h. and better acceleration from its 65 b.h.p. engine. Transmission is by fourspeed all-synchromesh gearbox and through a diaphragmspring clutch, but clutch pedal pressure has been reduced. Automatic transmission is available with the 1500 c.c. car. The suspension is still independent at the front and conventional at the rear, but there have been detail improvements to give better ride and roadholding. The track is wider than previously, and the turning circle is now 30ft.
Disc brakes are fitted to the front wheels, and both the brakes and the clutch are selfadjusting. The new Cortina has a pro-gressively-deforming front end to absorb crash energy, the door-locks are burst-proof and the rear-locks are also child-proof. The dash has fullwidth crash padding and the rear -vision mirror is designed to give way when struck. The Aeroflow ventilation system has been improved to give better demisting of the side and rear windows, and much attention has been paid to seating, low noise levels, and general comfort.
