WELLINGTON. Oct. 20. The Government is guaranteeing up to £BOOO worth of freight a trip for a monthly shipping service by the Hoim Company to Norfolk Island and New Caledonia. The Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Marshall) gave this information in Parliament tonight when the House voted a supplementary estimate of £86.000 to meet the cost of the guarantee.
Mr Marshall said in | answer to Dr. A. M. Fin- ' lav (Opp., Waitakere) that I from last December 1, as i a result of representations from the South Pacific trade mission, the Govern- I ment had agreed to guar- | antee the service for a year as a trial.
There were markets to be had in Norfolk and Noumea with a regular shipping service, he said.
If the freight came to £BOOO a trip, the Government would have nothing to pay.
