Tributes To County Clerk
The resignation of the County Clerk (Mr K. Maclachlan) was accepted “with deep regret” at a meeting of the Waimairi County Council last night. Mr Maclachlan, who has been appointed clerk to the Waitemata County Council, asked if he could terminate his duties on January 24. After 16 years with the council, it had not been an easy decision to take, said Mr Maclachlan, in his letter of resignation. He particularly recalled the years between 1954 and 1961, when the county underwent a transformation from a rural to an urban one. He would leave the council knowing that these changes had been efficiently dealt with.
The chairman (Mr O. C. Mitchell) said that all councillors, on hearing the news, had been unanimous in the view that everything possible should be done to get Mr Maclachlan to change his mind. Mr Mitchell said that Mr Maclachlan’s departure would be a severe loss to the council. His knowledge of his job was unsurpassed. Cr. A. A. Adcock, the senior serving councillor, also paid a tribute to Mr Maclachlan. The council accepted his resignation with deepest regret, and placed nn record “the honest, efficient and knowledgeable way in which he served the council.” It was agreed to take immediate steps to fill the vacancy.
