' China Closer To H-Bomb '

(NX P. 4. Reuter—Copyright) WASHINGTON, October 20. China appeared close to conducting its fourth nuclear explosion, State Department officials said yesterday.

They expressed doubt that the test would take place this month while President Johnson was in the Far East.

A report in the “New York Times” said it was likely that another Chinese test could come while the President was attending the summit talks of the Vietnam war allies in Manila or while he was touring six Asian countries between now and November 2.

Some congressmen expressed the belief that the reported timetable was correct, but

sources at the State Department and the Atomic Energy Commission thought a detonation this month would call for an extraordinary effort on the part of Peking.

Such a drive was not ruled out, but did not appear to be “on the cards,” they said. There was general agreement, however, that China was forging ahead rapidly with the development of a sophisticated nuclear weapon and j eventually a hydrogen bomb [at its test site of Lop Nor. Sinkiang province, western I China.
