MACHINE SHEARING

A shearing and wool handling competition will be held for members of North Canterbury Young Farmers’ Club In line with previous years. Teams of four will contest this event, two shearing by machines with the other two members doing the floor and table work. As well a straight machine shearing competition will be held for open class shearers. Winners of the Y.F.C. section will go forward to a Canterbury area final. Rangiora was one of the first shows to introduce shearing competitions to its programmes In 1959.

The two shearers in the Y.F.C. classes will be judged as a team on results, style of shearing not counting. Fifty points will be allocated for this part of the competition. Another 30 points will be allocated for the board work, which includes preparing the fleece for the table work and clearing the floor. Table work carries 40 points and includes the removal of any rough or blemished pieces with a minimum disturbance of the fleece which is then rolled ready for baling. Another 30 points can be earned for wool room work, including sweeping of wool room floor, stacking of fleeces and sorting of oddments. An allocation of up to 100 points can be earned for speed of shearing.
