KENNEL SHOW POPULAR
Another record entry has been received by the North Canterbury Kennel Association championship show, which will be held in conjunction with the fun carnival and horse jumping show at the Rangiora showgrounds on Monday. Fifty-five breeds of dogs are among the 245 entries, which include some new to championship parades in North Canterbury. In this category are the miniature Schnauzer, Beagles, and Shitzu, the last being a Tibetan type of dog. There will be dogs of all types, shapes and sizes from the smallest to the largest. The tallest type of dog being bred and exhibited in New Zealand, an Irish Wolf Hound,
will again be exhibited by Mr A. A. Campbell, Oxford. At the other end of the scale will be the diminutive Chichuahuas.
Pembroke Welsh Corgies are again the most popular breed and all other prominent breeds are represented among the entries, including German shepherds, which provide the second strongest section, Shetland sheepdogs, rough coated collies and Samoyeds. Another breed returns to showing after an absence of some years. This is the Australian Silky, once known as the Sydney Silky, a breed that should not be confused with the Australian terrier. “Scotties” are back again too. It was pleasing to see
increasing entries for the North Canterbury show, which was now the third largest in the South Island, said the secretary (Mr N. Brown). Entries were only 10 behind those at Ashburton recently. North Canterbury was one of the most progressive shows in the South Island, and eventually it would outstrip any in the South Island for entries except for the Canterbury Kennel Association.
Interest in show dogs was growing every year, said Mr Brown. Just because they were used as pets it did not mean that they were just fancy dogs. An example of this was the German shepherd, which in Germany was used, not as a sheep dog in the New Zealand sense, but as a guard dog protecting the flocks at night. The judge will be Mrs Z. Schubert, Auckland, who will be doing her first judging in the South Island.
