Machinery Restored
Mr G. Jelfs at work restoring an Austin tractor for the competition being conducted for the best restored piece of machinery entered by an individual. This little known type of tractor was salvaged from a resting place under a tree on a farm at Mataura.
Although it had been standing otherwise unprotected from the weather, the tractor was eventually coaxed to mount a trailer under its own power for transport to Rangiora.
A number of these tractors were produced during the 1920 s after being developed as a result of a drive during the First World War to boost food production when Britain was heavily blockaded. The first of the type was produced in 1917 and was heralded as the “first ali-British tractor” and large numbers appeared on the market in 1919. Restoration of the tractor has been going on during most evenings and week-ends for about a month, with help from Mr B. Moir.
