Skoglund Four Wins In Bowls Singles

(Special Correspondent N.Z.PA.) SYDNEY. . . The English champion, D. Bryant, continued on his winning way at the world bowls championships in Sydney yesterday. He is undefeated after the first five rounds of the singles.

The New Zealand representative, P. C. Skoglund, is one of four bowlers of the 16 competing for the title to have won four of their first five matches. Another round of sectional play in the fours was held yesterday, South Africa being the only unbeaten team after three games. South Africa heads Section A with Wales and Canada, two wins each, following. The other five teams in the section, including New Zealand, have each won one match. Four Lead Section In Section B, Scotland, Malawi, the United States and Australia have each had two wins, while England has had one win and two ties. Skoglund won both his matches yesterday but made very hard work of them, only narrowly beating what should have been easy opposition. He defeated L. Smales (Fiji), 21-17, and the Welshman, Evans, 21-20. The New Zealand four—N. R. D. Lash, Mr R. Buchan, G. H. Jolly, and W. P. O’Neilllost their second consecutive match, going down 22-13 to Canada. Rain washed out play in the morning, and only two rounds of singles and one of fours were played. Below Best Form Skoglund was outbowled for much of both his matches, and will have to find much

better form to continue to be regarded as a serious challenger for the world singles title.

The fours have not clicked as a combination and appear to be unable to adapt themselves to the greens, which are running at between 12 and 14 seconds against the 18 to 20 seconds customary in New Zealand.

Among the features of an exciting day's play were the runaway win by N. Walker (South Africa) over the Australian, G. Kelly, 21-10, and then his 21-14 defeat by J. Hershaw (Scotland); the hard fight by A. Periera (Hong Kong) before losing to Kelly, 21-20: and the fine play of J. Spears (Papua-New Guinea) against Bryant.

In the fours, Australia had an exciting win 23-22, over Rhodesia. The win on the last end was the first time Australia had been ahead In the match. Results:— SINCLRS Fourth Round D.
