Six Records At St. Bedes’ Sports
After a quiet morning, records fell like nine-pins ip the St. Bede’s College athletic sports at the college grounds yesterday. Seven records fell in the preliminaries and finals last week, and yesterday perfect conditions assisted in the breaking of another six.
The standard was set in a morning, event, the under-14 440 yards, in which 13-year-old G. Donnithorne broke R. F. Warren’s 22-year-old record. His time of 59.1 sec clipped O.lsec off the old time. Although challenged over the longer distances by J. Jenkins, Donnithorne had things very much his own way. in the under-14 championship. Included in his six track wins—from 75 yards to the mile—were two records: the 440 yards and the half mile, in which he cut o.2sec off the record with his time of 2min 19.8 sec. As well, Donnithorne had previously won the IJ-mile cross country championship in 9min 27.55ec —a 17.5 sec improvement on the college record. Donnithorne capped his performances by holding his lead to win the 4 by 110-yard relay for Dowling House.
G. Donaldson added Ilin to his senior pole vault reclord, and K. Cowan also bettered his own record—by 17ft sin—in winning the senior javelin with 160 ft. The championship winners were: Senior, R. Berry; intermediate, L. Counsell; junior, J. Matheson; under 14, G. Donnithorne. Results: Under-U SO yards hurdles: D. Brocherie 1, R. Dale 2, M. -Stratford 3. Time, 12.3. 880 yards: G.
