Dope Tests Demanded For Medal Winners

(N.Z.P.A. Reuter— Copyright) MEXICO CITY. Doctors on the International Federation of Sports Medicine will ask officials to demand laboratory drug tests of first, second and third place winners during the 1968 Mexico City Olympic Games.

They want the first three in each final to have laboratory tests of saliva, blood and urine, to determine if they have been doped.

This was announced yesterday by Dr. Gilberto Bolanos Cacho, president of the Mexican Federation of Sports Medicine, and a member of the International Federation of Sports Medicine. Medicine are meeting here to carry out observations on the use of amphetimine and cocaine in Mexico’s 7478 ft altitude and to discuss the question of the use of dope in general in sports events. Several European doctors expressed opinions on the use of dope in sports during the press conference. Dr. Albet Dirix, vice-presi-dent of the Belgian Olympic medical committee, noted that tests were taken for doping at the world cycling , championships, held earlier this year in West Germany. “After a number of tests, we proved conclusively that 25 per cent of the Cyclists in the international competitions were dragged,” he said. Dr. Dirix Issued a call for a control of the use of drugs. Dr. Ludwig Prokop, of Austria, in charge of dope Investigation for the International Federation of Sports Medicine, said that in Tokyo in 1964 “there was only haphazard organisation to prevent the use of dope in sports events. “Only five tests were, made and some use of doping was found among cyclists,” he added.
