CYCLING RACES

Complaint To Board (N.Z. Press Association > WELLINGTON. Road cycle races in New Zealand are to be investigated by the Commissioner of Transport (Mr R. J. Polaschek) following a complaint to yesterday’s meeting of the National Roads Board. Mr T. G. Fouhy, of Wellington. complained that on September 23, between Paekakariki and Raumati south, between 200 and 300 cars were held up by a road cycling race. Mr Fouhy said cyclists did not contribute to the upkeep of the roads and he asked that the board give consideration to the prohibition of cycle races on roads before a serious accident resulted. Commenting on the complaint Mr Polaschek said the problem arose because of the number of cars following the race. There was no doubt that these races caused quite considerable inconvenience to the motorist.

The secretary of the board, Mr C. N. Johnson, said the incident took place on the same day as a race meeting at Otaki. The Minister of Works (Mr Allen) said cycling races should be run on a day when nothing else was on in the area.

Open Entries. —The closing date for entries for the 1966 New Zealand Open golf championship has been extended from October 26 to October 31.
