U.S. FORCES IN EUROPE
Cut Urged By Mansfield (N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) WASHINGTON, October 18. The Senate Democratic leader, Senator Mike Mansfield, today dropped his . effort to push through a Senate resolution this year calling for a substantial cut in United States forces in Europe. Senator Mansfield said this did not mean the issue was either gone or forgotten. He said the resolution would be reintroduced soon after Congress convened next year. Thirty-two other senators joined Senator Mansfield in co-sponsoring the resolution which became a touchy issue, particularly because it was introduced shortly before the recent Washington visit of the West German Chancellor, Dr. Ludwig Erhard. Germany opposed any cut in United States forces.
