“The Press” In 1866
October 20 WELLINGTON, Friday, 5.45 p.m. The St Kilda has sailed for Napier to convey the Hau-hau prisoners to the Chathams. A guard of twenty-five men is to be stationed there. Tenders are out for extending the telegraph to Masterton and Wairarapa. Uneasiness is felt in Wairarapa respecting a body of armed Hau-hau strangers who have been visiting there
for the last three weeks. Colonel Haultain went up this morning.
The Resident Magistrate, Mr Mair, reports to Dr. Hector that there was a severe earthquake on September 22 and 23, at Mount Edgecombe, in Auckland province, accompanied by terrible thunderings therefrom. Pumice and gravel cliffs, forty feet high, crumbled down, and the earth opened, leaving fissures five feet deep.
