CLIMBERS RETURN
“All Fit And Well” (From Our Own Reporter) TIMARU, October 19. The three Christchurch climbers who did not return to the Tasman hut last night after climbing the 10,200 ft Mount Elie de Beaumont spent the night in the open, and reached the hut in improved weather about 6 a.m. today. The Mount Cook National Park Board’s chief ranger (Mr M. L. Burke) said that the three men—Messrs J. Connor, F. Gair, and K. Barton—had. as was thought, climbed the mountain, but he was unaware how they had fared during the night. Radio reception from the hut was not good. The men were expected back at park headquarters on Friday. Mr Burke said two climbers who had ascended Mount Elie de Beaumont the same day and passed the three Christchurch climbers in mid-afternoon, left the Tasman hut early this morning to look for them.
“Fortuntely. the weather had cleared, and they met the three men heading back towards the hut. They are fit and well—but probably feeling a bit cold.” said Mr Burke.
