A VANISHING RACE.—Diesel-powered locomotives are steadily replacing steam locomotives on the New Zealand Railways. Diesel will be used almost exclusively on the northern section of the main trunk line after October 23, when a special steam train chartered by the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Railway and Locomotive Society will run to Kaikoura. Steam locomotives will continue to be used on runs closer to Christchurch, mainly for short passenger hauls to Rangiora. This photograph shows one of the New Zealand-designed AB-class locomotives, first introduced in 1924, hauling a goods train through one of the many cuttings on the Weka Pass section of the Waiau branch line. Two engines of this class may haul a special train to Kaikoura.
