WELLINGTON, Oct. 10. I Plans have been completed for giving the pub- ' lie access to the hydroelectric project at Mana- • pouri. the Minister of 1 Tourism (Mr Eyre) said 1 yesterday. Mr Eyre said the access | would be limited at first by considerations of safety and j the need to ensure that the progress of the work would not be hindered in any way. , It would be quite impos- , sible to allow visitors to go ( underground, he said. The Minister said that ini- ' tially the Electricity Depart-1 ( ment would provide an Infor- L mation building at West Arm.! This would be specially ori-L ented to allow the best pos-[ ( sible view down the lake. L Mr Eyre said there would be a topographical model. pro- !( [vision for pictorial displays! and probably for an audio-! visual aid presentation, which would tell the story of the project in sound and coloured slides. Arrangements would be made to cater for parties
landing from launches with-! out becoming involved with, or delaying project traffic. “The area of flat land available, both at West Arm and at Deep Cove, is so restricted that it is not practicable to permit visitors to move with in the area except in controlled parties,” he said. The Minister said that j look-out points were being! provided on the Wilmot Pass! road. At Deep Cove there would be a look-out shelter [building designed to be a (nucleus for more comprehensive arrangements later. Mr Eyre said that during !the construction period, vide; loads would have to be car-1 [ried from time to time over! I the Wilmot Pass road, and the transport of visitors' would have to be integrated [with the use of the road by the contractors. : I
