NEW BLOCK OPENED
West Lyttelton School “These buildings and others in Lyttelton have been recently built because they are needed, and I am pleased because this means that Lyttelton is going ahead and the port is going ahead,” said Mr N. E. Kirk, M.P. for Lyttelton, when he opened the new classroom block and administration building at the West Lyttelton primary school yesterday. Mr F. B. Smith, headmaster of the school, said the classrooms had been completed in June and had been in use since that time. The present roll was 210 and next year the roll was expected to reach 223, but it could be more if the Cass Bay settlement increased. The new* classrooms were full now and an old prefabricated building used as a library might have to be used as a classroom. There had been great difficulty in expanding the school because of lack of building space, Mr Smith said. The new school buildings were spread over seven levels and before any new buildings can be begun more retaining walls would have to be built.
