Crocodiles Among Cases Dealt With By S.P.C.A.
Two instances of crocodiles being kept in cramped conditions were among the many matters investigated by the inspector for the Canterbury Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals over a period of eight months, according to the annual report of the society.
The inspector (Nir S. B. Holder) said 264 complaints had been investigated in the period.
Three donkeys were attended to. a goat had its rope too short, a pigeon had been abandoned, a magpie had been neglected, and a budgerigar left in a cage. Fifty-nine neglected dogs were attended to. It had been ascertained that 31 dogs had been tied for too long, 10 abandoned, nine in wet, dirty conditions, eight shut up for too long, and three beaten excessively. Poisoning Suspected There were nine cases of cats suspected of having been poisoned, six cats found wild and starving, 11 abandoned, and six trapped. Other animals attended to included 16 horses, 13 sheep, and nine Pigs. The chairman (Mr J. Quickenden) said the cost of running the society’s animal home were very high and the
number of cats kept there had to be limited. Mr Quickenden said the relationship between the society and veterinary surgeons had improved. Homes Found Homes had been found for 245 cats and kittens, 86 dogs. 38 puppies, and one goat, said the manager (Mr D. Murffltt). Between April, 1965, and August this year the animal ambulance had been out on 524 calls. Public support had been gratifying and during his period as manager he had received £491 in donations and had been paid £l5 towards the l«r>eving fund, said Mr Murifitt. I The account for purchase and sale of pigs showed a deficit of £779, which was transferred to the animal home income and expenditure account. The pigs cost £585, food was £470, equipment needed cost £B6, wages were £213, vetedinary and solicitors’ fees came to £42, a total of £1396, and sales came to £617.
