Filthy Streets Complained Of

A complaint that the shopping area streets were in a filthy condition, and a disgrace, was made by five Oxford street businessmen to the Lyttelton Borough Council last night.

Their shops, they said, looked as though they had been through a sand-storm, with dirt blown in from the street.

Why, they asked, did the council not wash down the streets?

They swept the footpaths in front of their premises every day, but the wind soon brought the dirt back.

“Within the last month, the works committee has started using a fire hydrant and hose to wash down the footpaths,” said Cr. N. D. Parratt. “It has been the general practice to wash down the streets.” “Once in a blue moon,” said Cr W. S. Tredinnick. Cr. Parratt: That’s incorrect. Cr. Tredinnick said that Norwich quay was last washed down for the Queen Mother’s visit.

“It was done three weeks ago,” replied the works overseer (Mr F. Davidson) The complaint was referred to the works committee.
