LOSS OF FINGERS
Jury Awards £6120 (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. Oct. 10. After an eight-hour retirement a Supreme Court jury of nine men and three women assessed damages of £6120 in favour of a 25-year-old man who lost two fingers in a drum rolling machine in June last year. The final figure was £4358 after the jury had apportioned part of the blame for the accident to plaintiff. The jury retirement is said to be one of the longest in a civil action in the Supreme Court in Auckland. The jury failed to reach a unanimous vote after five hours and returned to receive a further direction from Mr Justice Woodhouse. The verdict was finally arrived at by a nine-to-three vote. The plaintiff, Peter Russell Jennings, claimed £lO,OOO general damages and £lO6 2s 6d special damages against his former employer, Rheem (N.Z.), Ltd., following an accident at the firm’s Avondale factory.
