MARRIAGE GUIDANCE
1500 Couples Seek Advice (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Oct. 10. Only 1500 couples out of 40,000 who were married last year sought the advice of the Marriage Guidance Council, the national secretary, Mr James Duncan, told the council’s annual conference yesterday. Mr Duncan said that the organisation hoped more people would attend courses provided by the council. The chairman of the council, Mr J. V. Illott, said that experience in New Zealand showed that by the time a couple whose marriage was in trouble came to the council the position was almost hopeless. “It has probably already reached the stag j where the marriage would break up—if they came earlier we would probably get a better result than that of 33 1-3 per cent of marriages saved.” He said better results would be obtained if guidance was given to engaged couples.
