BEEF SCARCE ON COAST

Butchers Come To Addington (From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH, September 29. Butchers on the West Coast are experiencing a shortage of beef and many have had to buy cattle at Addington. The shortage is expected to continue about six weeks. Greymouth butchers attribute the shortage to the prolonged spell of dry weather. The stock in consequence has not been coming forward as quickly as usual. The export trade is another factor contributing to the shortage. Last summer and autumn farmers were getting good prices for their stock and kept few for sale in the winter months.

There are practically no cattle for sale on the West Coast at the moment. The supply from South Westland has been diminished since the opening of the Haast Pass road. Earlier, the farmers in the area had kept stock for winter sale.
