Pessimistic

The Commonwealth Secretary (Mr Herbert Bowden) said today that he was not very optimistic after his talks with the Rhodesian Prime Minister (Mr lan Smith). “Time was running out,” but wise decisions could still be made, Mr Bowden said. “I think we have
cleared the air,” he said before his departure after a 10-day visit “To that extent the talks have been valuable. “If you ask me whether I am very optimistic, I am afraid the answer will have to be no.” Mr Bowden said that Britain and Rhodesia wanted "to retire into their corners and think” about the Rhodesian independence crisis.
