HAITIANS WARNED
Hurricane Threat
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MIAMI, Sept. 28.
Hurricane Inez, already
the killer of at least 15 people, poured advance gales on to the southern coast of the Dominican Republic and Haiti tonight. The San Juan Weather Bureau warned coastal residents to flee from the hurricane’s path, but officials feared the word might not have reached the remote areas where 8000 were killed in three previous storms. “Inez is a very intense hurricane,” the forecasters said. “Residents of Hispaniola are urged to take all precautions against very dangerous winds, heavy rains and possible flooding.” The hurricane killed 15 yesterday when it roared across the French island of Guadeloupe with 160 m.p.h. winds. Seventy-two were injured and 6000 left homeless. President de Gaulle announced in Paris that he had given 20,000 dollars from his personal funds to help the islanders.
Life Imprisonment.— Two former Nazi occupation officials in the Ukraine have been sentenced to life imprisonment for their part in the war-time murder of Jews and partisans.—Berlin, Sept. 29.
