South Africa Warned

NEW YORK, September 28. A resolution warning South Africa not to commit aggression against three neighbouring territories on the verge of independence was approved today by the United Nations Trusteeship Committee.
In spite of protests by South Africa that it was “gratuitous and unwar-
ranted,” the resolution, sponsored by Asian and African nations, won solid acceptance, 82 to 2, with 15 abstentions.
Australia and New Zealand were among the abstentions. The vote sent the draft resolution to the General Assembly. The resolution endorses recommendations of the Committee on Colonialism and asks the General Assembly to restate its “grave concern” over alleged threats by South Africa to the territorial integrity of Bechuanaland, Basutoland and Swaziland.
The sponsors want the resolution adopted before Friday, when the first of the three, Bechuanaland, becomes independent under the name of Botswana. Basutoland will gain dependence on October 4 as Lesotho.
