TREATMENT OF WASTE
An assurance will be sought by the Christchurch Drainage Board from the Pollution Advisory Council that a primary treatment plant would suffice for Belfast Industrial and domestic wastes under the classification scheme for the lower Waimakariri river. The board agreed to tell the council that the classification was realistic and a reasonable attempt to classify waters on their present uses, thus avoiding the imposition of prohibitive costs on those discharging into the river. On the face of it, the board suggested, a primary plant to treat Belfast wastes was reasonable. The board had a responsibility to Christchurch in questions of costs, and could not give unqualified support for the proposal until it had more information.
