FOUNDRY BLAST

Inquiry By Experts (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Sept. 27. The explosion which wrecked part of an Avondale foundry last Friday definitely originated in a salt bath thought to have contained a nitrate mixture, the Chief Inspector of Explosives (Mr E. L. Sellens) said today. Mr Sellens has been investigating the blast with the Auckland explosives inspector, Mr H. C. Neal. Mr Sellens said the cause could only be determined by tests still to be carried out. The blast produced a crater a foot deep and about seven feet wide. Concrete under the bath was compressed a foot below its original level. Mr Sellens estimated it would take at least 100 pounds of gelignite to produce an equivalent explosion. Further action would be considered by the Department of Internal Affairs once the cause had been decided, he said.
