Popular Menaces

(New Zealand Press Association)

AUCKLAND, Sept. 19

More than 40 popular garden plants are being displayed in Auckland this week as part of the Health Department’s poisonous plant exhibition. All 60 items on display as poisonous plants were found in New Zealand and are common. Hemlock, foxglove, nightshade and tutu are well known as poisonous plants. Irises, kowhai, lily-of-the-valley,

daphne, daffodils, oleander, and laburnum—all regarded as menaces—are common in Auckland. From 30 to 40 people were admitted to hospital every year from poisoning by plants, said Miss C. F. Hempton, the Auckland health education officer for the Health Department. Possibly more were treated by parents, so that no records were available.
