TOUGH POLICY WITH SHOPLIFTERS URGED
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, Sept 18. A “get tough” policy with shoplifters has been advocated by the chairman of Wright, Stephenson and Company, Ltd., Mr C. U. Plimmer, in his annual report. “The losses which traders have to bear from shoplifting and burglaries is quite alarming,” Mr Plimmer said. Mr Plimmer urged authorities to impose harsher penalties on offenders and to force more offenders to make restitution.
Mr Plimmer said there seemed to be a tendency to condone shoplifting and to blame the owner for providing temptation.
“Such an outlook will certainly not add fibre to morals,” he said. Wright, Stephenson had a rule that all offenders should be handed over to the police, Mr Plimmer said. “If all traders did likewise then there would be an allround benefit to the community, which, in the long run has to bear the cost of thieving," he said.
