CROWD UPSET AT ROSEHILL

rspeeial Crapdt. N.Z.P.AJ SYDNEY. Punters at Rosehill on Saturday staged hostile demonstrations after 40/1 outsiders trained by the leading trainer, T. Smith, had won the two main races of the day. Dark Briar’s win in the Rosehill Guineas (10 furlongs) in which he downed the New Zealand-bred joint favourites, Garcon and Matariki, threw the pre-post market for the A.J.C. Derby into confusion, and Victory Roll’s win in the Rosehill Cup added insult to injury for punters. The demonstrations were described by racing writers today as the “longest and noisiest ever seen at Rosehill.” Policemen walked among the crowd telling them to break it up. Smith came under heavy attack because he also trains Garcon, which was second to Dark Briar in the Guineas. The £N.Z.16,000 A.J.C. Derby, which will be run at Randwick on October 1, becomes an open race after Dark Briar’s win, though most bookmakers have retained Matariki as favourite.

Dark Briar, ridden by the top apprentice, S. Spinks, beat Garcon (9/4 joint-favourite) by one length and a quarter with a similar distance to the other joint-favourite Matariki. Dark Briar took the lead soon after turning for home and was untroubled to hold off Garcon’s fast-finishing challenge in the final furlong. Matariki had every chance but did not respond to G. Moore’s pressure in the straight.

Tea Biscuit retained favouritism for the A.J.C. Metropolitan Handicap, in spite of his third in the Rosehill Cup (10 furlongs). Tea Biscuit came from second last at the home turn to finish fast on the outside, but was unable to beat Victory Roll and Strauss. Victory Roll <4O to 1) finished half a neck in front of Strauss (16 to 1). with Tea Biscuit (11 to 2) a length and a quarter away. Victory Roll’, win completed a long-priced double for Smith and Spinks.

The New Zealand-bred Fuhnen ran a great Metropolitan trial with his sound fourth. The former champion sprinter, Time and Tide, returned to his former glory

with an all-the-way win tn the Theo Marks Quality Handicap (seven furlongs). His win caused bookmakers to clip his odds to third favourite in the A.J.C. Epsom Handicap, behind the New Zealander, Chantal, and Galilee. Time and Time, which has »-J in the Epsom, carried a-1 to victory on Saturday. Starting 3 to 1 favourite, he beat Recap (4 to 1) by two lengths and a half, with Aveniam (20 to 1) a length and a half away third. The New Zealand-bred gelding, Auto Flow, clinched a Derby run with a runaway win in the 10-furlong Auburn Stakes. Auto Filou (Le Filou-Eutropie) started at 0 to 1 and won by five lengths from Nandaroo (4 to 1), with Lucky Trick <l4 to 1) a long head away third. Oromedes. (3 to 1) completed a double for New Zealand-bred horses by winning the Welter Handicap (seven furlongs and a half) by a long head from Count Remy (12 to 1) with Royal Spartan <l4 to 1.) a short head away third. Pow Wow And Romsev Dead Two of the progeny of Clynder died during the last week. Romsey, at Fleniington, and Pow Wow at the Trelawney Stud, Cambridge. Romsey, a four-year-old gelding, by Alcimedes from Clynder. broke a leg in a race fall on Saturday and Pow Wow, a seven-year-old mare by Khorassan from Clynder, was found dead in her paddock on Tuesday. Pow Wow was a good race mare when trained at Takanini by R. J. Wallace. Romsey showed promise when trained by R. C. Verner at Takanini until his sale as a late two-year-old to Australia, He looked just the type which might, with age. develop good staying form. Canadian Owned An English-bred colt, by King’s Bench from Splonetta, has Joined I. R. Tucker’s stable at Takanini. He will be raced by a Canadian, Mrs D. Margetts.
