SEMLOH IN FORM

Derby Entry Impresses Semloh advanced his prospects in the New Zealand Derby Stakes in November when he made a successful first appearance for the season in the New Brighton Stakes on Saturday. He led from end to end and won with a fair amount in hand from Stewart Hanover, another runner making a fresh start. Semloh’s trainer, F. E. Newfield, js undecided about starting him at Methven next Saturday, but he will definitely be on hand for the Forbury Park meeting next month Semloh, raced by Mrs N. Holmes, of Rakaia, is by Morano from Little Jan, a half-sister by First Lord to Rupee. Stewart Hanover paced a splendid race for second after following Semloh for most of the way. Montage, forced four or five wide from about the three furlongs, battled on for third, just ahead of Hagen, which was handy enough for most of the way. Stylos was two lengths away fifth, just ahead of Light Thaw and Cardinal King.

Cardinal King was brought to a stop after about a furlong when Pimienta broke and fell. His performance to finish so close up was a feature of the race. He paced his last halfmile in Imin 2sec, the opening two furlongs in 30 2-ssec.
