Masked Man Disturbed

A masked burglar who was disturbed by an elderly widow when he was searching her house about 230 a.m. yesterday dashed for the front door, hit his head on some hanging pot plants, tripped over the front doorstep and was struck on the head with a walking stick by the woman.

The man ran off and the police were summoned. An attempt was made to pick up the intruder’s trail with police dogs but they could not find the scent. The burglar, who was wearing a black mask over his face, stole a wallet and contents, valued at £2. The man entered the house through the front door and searched the bedrooms. He was searching a duchesse when he was discovered. He had stacked a pile of records near the front door but he left so hurriedly that he did not have time to take them. The sum of £132 0s fid in cash and cheques was stolen from the safe in the office of the People’s Palace in Manchester street on Friday night The money was in a canvas bag. He entered a bedroom and took a wallet from a pair of overalls. He removed £3 from the wallet which he threw down by the back door when he was discovered by a woman.
