No Night Tests Night driving tests favoured by the Birkenhead Borough Council did not find favour with Mr P. Rushton, the North Shore senior traffic officer. “I am not well disposed to have a traffic officer out at night with a lady driver,” he wrote. “This is no reflection on either party but just a matter of commonsense coupled with past experience.” On other aspects, he commented: "I do not relish the idea of reversing into a dark road or lane with a learner driver under tests.” The council was convinced and took no further action on the proposal. Memorial Pageant A memorial pageant for Mr F. Dunn, who was killed while test flying a glider over Lees Valley last May, will be held at Christchurch airport on February 26. The pageant is being organised by the Airport Authority, the Canterbury Aero Club, and the Canterbury Gliding Club for Mr Dunn’s family. The target is £3OOO. The latest issue of “Air News,” produced by the Airport Authority, says: “The cause is a needy one and donations would be welcome from anyone who knew this colourful and devoted personality in the sport of gliding.” Conscience Money The Treasury has received £312 7s lid in conscience money recently. It included £268 to the Inland Revenue Department and £1 to the Civil Aviation Department. A spokesman for the Treasury said: “It appears that some people who have not paid their dues to the Government, or who have evaded payment in some way, have a conscience prick,” he said. “Presumably paying anonymously makes them feel happier for the rest of their life. We only wish more people would do it.” Cloudy Weather The weather in Christchurch at the week-end was partly cloudy and mild. A light north-east wind blew on both days. A maximum temperature of 63 degrees was recorded at Harewood at 3 p.m. on Saturday. Yesterday the temperature rose steadily, and a maximum of 60 degrees was recorded at Harewood at 4 p.m. At 6 a.m. the temperature was 51 degrees, at 9 a.m. it was 54 degrees, and by noon it had risen to 56 degrees. A reading of 57 degrees was taken at 3 p.m. Heart Research A leading Australian cardiologist, Dr. P. Hetzel, gave a series of . lectures on the latest research into diseases of the heart and lungs at the Cook Hospital, Gisborne, during the week-end. Dr. Hetzel is the director of the cardiopulmonary investigation unit into diseases of the heart and lungs at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. He was brought to New Zealand by the Poverty Bay-East Coast Post-Graduate Medical Society and the Hawke’s Bay Medical Research Unit. —(P.A.)
