UNIVERSITY VACANCIES’ Massey University of Manawatu PALMERSTON NORTH NEW ZEALAND Applications are Invited for the CHAIR OF PHYSICS The University Council plans to develop general and honours courses in physics, and it has been decided to proceed with an appointment to a Chair of Physics. Applications are sought from physicists wha have interests in biological research fields or who work on problems of importance in the biological sciences. It is hoped that the undergraduate physics courses will be designed so that students may take subsidiary biological science units. The appointee may be expected to participate in the development of courses in biophysics and molecular biology. Initially, the Professor of physics will be a member of the Faculty of Biological Sciences. An extensive building programme is being implemented, and construction is about to commence on the first stage of the permanent science buildings. All science departmentsc at present offer general and honours degrees courses and provide appropriate courses for the applied faculties of Veterinary Science, Agricultural and Horticultural Science and Food Technology, and the above vacancies are to meet the needs of the increased rolls. Although initial emphasis has been placed on the biological sciences, the University plans to develop both the physical and the biological sciences. Sii ?e the applied faculties are all biologically-orientated and because of the range of national biological research institutes in the area, are unique opportunities for physical scientists who wish to work in collaboration with biological scientists or initiate investigations in the pure and applied biological sciences. In close proximity to the University are the D.S.I.R. Divisions of Grasslands, Plant Chemistry and Plant Physiology, and in addition, the national centres for Dairy Research, Poultry Research and Pig Research. Excellent relationships exist between the University and these research organisations, and many facilities are operated either jointly or on a basis of ready accessibility. The following list of facilities Indicate the range of equipment which has been installed to date: Philips electron microscope, 1.8. M 1620 computer with extended storage provisions, MS9 high-resolution mass-spectro-meter, Packard Series 4000 automatic scintillation counters, Bechman amino acid analyser, bulk fermenation and freezedrying equipment, preparative and analytical ultra centrifuges, extensive facilties for controlled plant growth, and excellent provisions for all types of chromatography and electrophonesis work. The existing controlled-environment facilities at the Plant Physiology Division are soon to be extended by the installation of a major phytotron. Further particulars are available from the Secretary-Gen-eral, Association of Commonwealth Universities. Marlborough House, Pall Mall, London, or from the undersigned. Some experience in structural geology would be a de sirable background. The department is equipped iwith high pressure deformation apparatus for pressures up to 10.000 atmospheres and temperatures up to 1000 degrees Centigrade or higher, and ancillary X-ray and optical facilities. This is being used for work on plastic deformation of rocks and minerals, with special attention to microstructure and fabric of relevance to geology. The salary of a Research Fellow is determined in the range A 4800—6300 dollars. Appointment is usually for three years with a possible extension to five years.
