TRADE GAP WIDENS

The European Free Trade .Association’s trade deficit with the Common Market increased by about 5 per cent during the first half of this year—although all eight E.F.T.A. countries exported more to the rival community. Figures released by E.fS.A. in Geneva today showed that its exports were 8 per cent higher at 3.860 million dollars than in the same period of 1965. But the trade gap widened further because imports from the six-nation Common Market rose by 7 per cent to 5,491 million dollars. British imports from the Common Market were running more than 18 per cent higher this year at 1,611 millions dollars while Denmark and Finland, an associate member of E.F.T.A. imported Jess than in 1965.
