SUSPECTED ARSON
Orini School Fire (N.Z. Press Association) HAMILTON, Sept. 16. The police were treating the fire which destroyed most of the Orini School last night as suspected arson, Sergeant B. Walters, of Ngaruawahia, said this morning. Orini residents and the Huntly Fire Brigade fought for two hours to try to save the school. The brigade had to travel 16 miles. Milk tankers are usually filled with water and used for country fires, but none were available in the area last night. The school swimming pool was empty and water had to be brought in two farm tanks towed by tractors. The fire was noticed by the head teacher, Mr G. Wilson, at 8.15 p.m. when one end of the two-classroom block was well alight. At one stage a second building almost caught fire. The school had 104 pupils and three teachers.
The school will be replaced. Meanwhile prefabricated classrooms are being brought from nearby schools, and it will re-open on Tuesday.
