AUTOMATIC TRUCKS
Semi-automatic transmissions for heavy-duty trucks have been introduced by the Leyland Group. The new “twopedal” trucks have five forward gears, changes being made by finger-tip movement of a small control knob. Use of the two-speed axle gives a total of 10 forward gears. Trucks with the new gearbox are said to give better performance than those with the standard manual gearbox, and the use of a fluid flywheel instead of a friction clutch is expected to extend operating life.
