“NOT SENT TO S.I.”

Out-Of-Date Locomotives (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 11. Out-dated railway locomotives were not transferred to the South Island after most of their useful life was over, the Minister of Railways (Mr McAlpine) told Parliament On Friday. Although this was the practice some years ago, it was definitely not the case today, he said. Mrs E. E. McMillan (Opp., Dunedin North) asked the Minister why locomotives which were liable to break down were used by the Railways Department. She referred to occasions in Dunedin when two locomotives pulling passenger trains broke down and had to be replaced.

Mrs McMillan said both cases had caused considerable delays. Mr McAlpine said both locomotives had been given major overhauls within 12 months of the breakdowns. Mechanical breakdowns of this nature were rare, he said. In both cases the lefthand piston rod had become disconnected.

Snowden Applies.—The former Kiwi captain, W. L. Snowden, has applied to the New Zealand Rugby League to play in Australia next season. Snowden captained the Kiwis on their tour of England and France last year.
